Into the late 1960’s, Avatar by Jean Adriel, published in 1947, was one of only two biographies available about Meher Baba, the other being The God-Man by Charles Purdom. Avatar was unique, both a colorful, highly personal first-person account of the author’s spiritual preparation for her meeting with Meher Baba in 1931, and an intimate biography of Meher Baba using sources available to her in the mid-1940s.

Avatar vividly reveals the inner challenges in one’s relationship with Meher Baba, describing many events from ‘behind the scenes’ which capture the gamut of emotions experienced by Baba’s close followers in daily life with Him. Jean’s deep background in Western Metaphysics and Depth Psychology informs the spirit of Avatar. Like her close friend Princess Norina Matchabelli, Jean had numerous spiritual experiences before meeting Baba.

And now, some 40 years after Jean’s passing, Meher Baba Books of Los Angeles has made Avatar available in print once again. They have reproduced Avatar in its original form, taking care to preserve the flow of the book and Jean’s original prose
